How to choose skincare products for your skin type

The skincare aisle can feel overwhelming. Hundreds of products promise the same results, yet what works for one person can irritate another. The good news: choosing well comes down to knowing your skin type and keeping your routine simple.
1. Identify your skin type
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, pat it dry and wait an hour. If your skin feels tight, it is likely dry. If it looks shiny all over, it is oily. A shiny forehead and nose with comfortable cheeks suggests combination skin, and stinging or redness points to sensitivity.
2. Read the label, not the claims
Look at the ingredient list rather than the front of the bottle. As a rule of thumb:
Dry skin: ceramides, hyaluronic acid and glycerin
Oily skin: niacinamide, salicylic acid and light gel textures
Sensitive skin: fragrance-free formulas with few ingredients
Combination skin: balance with a light moisturiser and targeted treatments

3. Introduce one product at a time
Add a single new product every two weeks. If irritation appears, you will know exactly what caused it. Always patch-test on the inner forearm first, and use sunscreen every morning.
4. Know when to see a specialist
Persistent breakouts, sudden changes in a mole, or a rash that will not settle are all reasons to book a visit. A dermatologist can diagnose the cause and prescribe treatment that no product on the shelf can match.
